Baby Photo Shoot

I am a model! Mommy and I had our very own photo shoot. I dressed up in one of my fancy gowns with a matching headband. I looked so pretty! Mommy says I’m always pretty, but I felt extra pretty for our photo shoot. You can have your own photo shoot too. It’s easy and fun. I’ll share some of my tips with you to help get you started.

I am a model!

Lighting

Good lighting will show off those beautiful features. Bad lighting will cast unflattering shadows across that face. Sunlight is generally best, but a good white light will work well too. If you’re a beginner looking for clear photos, keep the light source behind the camera whenever possible. If you’re feeling adventurous, try experimenting with various angles to see the effects  of different lighting.

Background vs. Backdrop

Another thing to consider is the background. You don’t want to ruin your pretty pictures with a pile of dishes sitting on a counter in the background. Chose a place with minimal clutter to keep the focus on the model. Take a look at the colours of your background to make sure they will be flattering, while providing enough contrast to make that model stand out. If you can’t find a suitable background inside your home, consider heading outside, or improvise a backdrop.

A brown blanket for my backdrop.

A backdrop doesn’t have to be a complicated painted scene. Keep it simple. A large sheet or blanket will do the trick. Chose one in a complimenting colour and avoid anything with a bold pattern. The focus of the photo is the model, not the backdrop. You don’t want it to overwhelm the scene. Tuck the edges into a tall piece of furniture, behind a door, or use tape to adhere it to the wall. To be extra fancy, let it drape over the ground and put your model right on top.

Props

Take a moment to think about any props you might want to use. Your model doesn’t have to sit on the ground. You could sit your model on a chair. If you’re using the backdrop, you could stuff pillows underneath to position the model better, or just for added texture. You could even drape a sheet or blanket over a chair for a different look. Or throw a large blanket on top of the bed and do your photo shoot from above.

How did you get up there?

Wardrobe

Keep those creative juices flowing when choosing outfits for your model. Don’t expect a baby to go through a dozen wardrobe changes. We get tired easily and this photo shoot is supposed to be fun. Pick one or two of your favourite outfits for your model to wear and remember to accessorize.

Time to Vogue

Now the fun begins! Try some music to get your model in the mood. I recommend the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Get your model in position, and the camera ready and aimed. Time to unleash the fun! Make a silly face or a funny sound and start clicking. Next, pull out a toy, jiggle it just above the camera, and click some more. You may feel silly, but the funnier you are, the better those pictures will turn out.

Mommy is so funny!

Take a lot of pictures. Every time you’re inspired to press that button, press it a number of times. People blink, babies get distracted, stuff happens. Most of the pictures you take won’t turn out right and you can delete them later. Every time you press that button there is a chance at that perfect photo. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun!

    • Thank you. It`s definitely important to take a lot of pictures. I took around 400. Many didn’t turn out right. Some were hilarious and some turned out beautiful. But I was very pleased and do plan on doing it again. Thanks for reading.

  • Oh, what an absolutely gorgeous set of photos! Great tips – particularly the one about taking loads of shots. I find maybe one in 20 shots of my son is a keeper, lots are terrible, but every now and again there is a complete gem! Thank heavens for digital cameras! Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday

  • These are gorgeous photos! I need to take the clutter advice – my pictures always have something cluttering the background (usually washing or a messy house)! #KCACOLS

    • Thank you. All you need to do is find that perfect angle that won’t get the clutter in the shot. If you were able to zoom out on most of my photos, you would see that the camera was pointed at that sweet spot between the laundry pile and the stack of toys on the floor. Another trick is to clear the area around the baby and take your photos pointing downwards. Or plop your little one on the couch and zoom in until all you see is baby and couch. Voila, the illusion of a clean house.
