Root Vegetable Medley Baby Food Recipe

One of the first vegetable blends I ever tasted was our root vegetable medley baby food. I loved it then, and it’s still one of my favorites. This recipe combines the earthy flavors of sweet potatoes, carrots, and potatoes, creating a delicious and nutritious puree. The natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes and carrots really shines through in this dish.

Another great thing about this recipe is that it can easily be tweaked to your preferred consistency. At first I would only like it with lots of milk, but now that I’m a big girl, a little less milk works for me. It’s an excellent recipe for beginners, and it works very well as a side dish for older babies. This root vegetable medley baby food recipe is a winner in my book!

Potatoes provide complex carbohydrates for energy, fiber for digestion, and vitamins C and B, along with potassium. Sweet potatoes are notable for their high beta-carotene content, which converts to vitamin A, supporting vision and immune function. They also offer vitamins C, E, and potassium. Carrots are packed with beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, K, and potassium, enhancing vision, immune health, and digestion.

The natural sweetness of the vegetables makes it appealing to little ones, while the smooth texture is easy for them to eat. It is a perfect option for little ones just starting to explore solid foods. It’s also great for toddlers and the rest of the family too! Simply make it a little thicker and serve it as a side instead of plain mashed potatoes.

Ingredients:

1 medium-sized potato

1 small sweet potato

5 medium-sized carrots

Milk (Optional)

Organic potato, sweet potato, and carrots
Yummy root vegetables.

Preparation:

Preheat the steamer on high.

Scrub your potato, sweet potato, and carrots. Peel the root vegetables and give them another rinse. Cut the potato and sweet potato into one-inch cubes. Slice your carrots into one-inch pieces.

Potatoes were first domesticated in the Andes mountains of South America around 8,000 years ago. There are over 4,000 varieties of potatoes, with different shapes, colors, and sizes.

Put your vegetables into the steamer and reduce the heat to medium. Steam for about 20 minutes or until all the vegetables can easily be pierced with a fork. They should be soft but holding their shape.

Despite their name, sweet potatoes are not related to potatoes. They belong to the morning glory family. Sweet potatoes come in various colors, including orange, purple, yellow, and white.

Remove from the steamer and place on a plate to cool. Once the vegetables are at room temperature or slightly warm, put them into a food processor. Pulse to chop and then run the machine until the contents are thoroughly blended.

Carrots were originally purple, red, yellow, and white. The orange carrot was developed in the Netherlands in the 17th century to honor the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange.

The starch in the root vegetables will make it somewhat thick. You can make it easier to eat by adding milk, breast milk, or formula. Gradually add the milk to it and run the food processor again. Repeat until desired consistency is achieved.

Root vegetables are hardy vegetables and can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. If storing in the fridge, we recommend that the vegetables be stored in pieces. Once food is pureed, it begins to lose nutritional value rapidly due to the food’s exposure to air. Prepare the puree by adding the milk and blending in a mini food processor just before serving.

The leftovers can be kept in the freezer in meal-sized portions for up to 3 months. When frozen, the root vegetable medley baby food puree retains more nutritional value. To reheat the puree, simply thaw in the refrigerator overnight and then warm in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally.

  • My little ones both used to love this combination. Unfortunately the youngest can now sniff out a vegetable at 100 yards and flat down refuses to eat anything containing them but I can just about get away with making mash with half sweet and half normal potato (I’m about to start experimenting with soups to hide some veggies in). My oldest is the other way round and loves sweet potato and carrots but hates normal potatoes

    • Peachy isn’t a fan of regular potatoes either, but she will eat them if I mash them up with something else. I think it’s their texture that throws her off. She doesn’t like how sticky they get. Too starchy. Peachy loves most fruits and vegetables but she is not crazy about meat. I have to hide it in other things. I’m getting ready to make her a stew for the first time in hopes that I can get a good amount of meat in it. If she likes it, I’ll have to include the recipe on the site.

    • So far we haven’t had any issues with vegetables. It’s meat that gives us more of a problem. But if we mix it in with vegetables we’re usually ok. Thanks for reading.
