A New Menu

At my last check-up, my doctor said I’m ready for solid foods. Mommy and I have been experimenting with new textures and flavours. What an adventure it’s been! I had no idea there were so many mealtime options out there. The world is full of tasty treats just waiting to be discovered.

My very first solid food was oatmeal. What a surprise it was. At first I couldn’t figure out why mommy was shoving that spoon-shaped object in my mouth. Next thing I know, my mouth is full of oatmeal. In all honesty, the flavour wasn’t bad. In fact, it was mostly the milk that I was already accustomed to. But the texture! Nobody could have prepared me for that.

I'm a bit of a messy eater.
I’m a bit of a messy eater.

I tried to eat it but my tongue kept getting in the way. Every time I tried to close my mouth with the oatmeal in there, my tongue would squish the oatmeal out. After a few spoonfuls I had enough, and I told mommy that I didn’t want any more oatmeal. Mommy didn’t push the matter and gave me my usual milk instead.

Later that day, mommy gave me oatmeal again. At least that time I knew what to expect so it wasn’t such a shocking surprise. My tongue still managed to squish the oatmeal out of my mouth, but some did get swallowed. At least there was some success.

Now that I’m more experienced, I love oatmeal. I have even moved on to puréed fruit and vegetables. Bananas and pears are my favourite. Carrots, sweet potatoes, prunes, grapes and honeydew melon are pretty good too. I’ll eat apples if there’s nothing else. I hate potatoes and raspberries. They’re disgusting. Mommy says that when I turn 6 months old, she will let me explore a whole new group of foods called meat.

When I try something for the first time, mommy makes me wait at least 3 days before she lets me try the next new thing. Mommy tells me that I could be allergic to something and if I eat too many new things at once, we won’t know which of those things I’m allergic to. I don’t know what that means but I trust mommy on this one.

Now that I’m so good at eating solid foods, I eat 3 meals per day. I have a big breakfast when I get up in the morning. I have a good meal before bedtime to prevent hunger during the night. The third meal is somewhere in between. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my milk. I get milk with every meal and at least two snacks of just milk every day.

I am such an experienced eater now. The spoon doesn’t confuse me at all any more. When I see it coming, I open my mouth and wait for food to be delivered. My tongue still gets in the way from time to time. I occasionally get too excited and blow bubbles into the spoon, sending food splattering everywhere. But overall it has been a great experience. I love exploring all the flavours and textures of solid food. I wonder what we’ll try next.
