Ingredients:

6 kiwis

3 ripe bananas

1 ripe avocado

Organic banana, avocado, and kiwi
Look at all that fruit!

Preparation:

Wash the kiwi fruit and the avocado thoroughly. Set the avocado aside. Cut off the ends on either side of each kiwi and gently peel off the skin. Cut in half lengthwise and slice into half-inch pieces. Place the kiwi slices into a blender and puree on high until they turn into liquid.

Originally known as green gooseberries, kiwis are native to China but were renamed and popularized by New Zealand.

When it comes to baby food, ripe bananas are typically preferred over unripe ones. Ripe bananas are sweeter, softer, and easier for babies to digest, making them ideal for purees. They also have a creamy texture and more readily available nutrients like potassium and vitamins.

Not only are ripe bananas tastier, they are less likely to cause constipation. Unripe bananas are firmer, less sweet, and contain more resistant starch, which can be harder for babies to digest. They are more starchy and will produce a thicker puree, which may have a somewhat sticky consistency.

Despite their tree-like appearance, banana plants are technically herbaceous and are considered the world’s largest herb.

Peel the bananas and cut off the very end of the pointy tip. Remove any of the fibers left on the bananas. Slice the bananas into half-inch pieces and put them in the blender along with the kiwi. Puree on high until smooth.

Retrieve the washed avocado. Slice into it and cut lengthwise down to the hard pit inside. Once sliced all the way around, twist the two halves to separate them and remove the pit in the middle. Use a spoon to scoop out all the avocado flesh.

Avocados were first cultivated in South Central Mexico about 10,000 years ago. An avocado tree can produce up to 500 avocados each year.

Use the spoon to get the avocado into manageable pieces. Add the avocado pieces to the blender with the banana and kiwi mixture. Run the blender on high until a velvety smooth puree is achieved. If it’s too thick to blend, you can add a little water, formula, or breast milk and blend a little longer.

Velvety smooth.

This kiwi with banana and avocado baby food puree keeps very well in the freezer for up to 3 months. We store ours in small containers for snacks and desserts. Banana and avocado will oxidize, causing them to change color rapidly when exposed to the air. The kiwi helps stabilize it somewhat, but we don’t recommend storing this puree in the fridge.

  • This looks yum and very healthy too! Perfect for the early days of weaning. I wish I could get my daughter to eat more veg, it’s one of my failings. Thanks so much for linking up at #fortheloveofBLOG. Claire x

    • Peachy has no problem with fruits or vegetables. It’s meat that’s more tricky to get in there. I think Peachy wants to be a vegetarian. This recipe is one of Peachy’s favourites. I plan on making a batch today. I just hope the avocado is ripe enough. Thanks for visiting 🙂

    • The kiwi is a bit sour like citrus fruit but the banana really mellows it out and the avocado makes it creamy. I hope your little one likes it. Thanks for visiting.

    • It was recently pointed out to me that many of the fruit baby food recipes would make really good slushies. Just freeze the fruit before putting it into a blender and you end up with a frozen treat. Thanks for visiting.
