The Broken Spoon: A Baby Learning to Eat and Figuring Life Out

I have some very important news to report today. As a baby learning to eat, I’ve been working hard on my early feeding milestones, and I must say, I’m doing an excellent job. I watch everything Mommy does, and I take notes, mental ones, because I don’t have pencils yet. Every day I discover something new about being a big girl, and honestly, I think I’m getting pretty good at this whole growing‑up thing.

As you may have heard, I am a big girl. I’m almost all grown up. I sleep through the night, eat solid foods, and help Mommy in the kitchen, and I can even roll from my tummy to my back. I’m practically an adult!

Mommy is teaching me a new skill. It’s called self-feeding, and it has been going very well. Mommy puts little bits of food in front of me, I pick them up with my fingers, and I put them in my mouth. It’s easy, and I have no trouble with the concept at all.

It’s not really a new skill. I’ve been picking things up and putting them in my mouth for quite some time. But these bits that Mommy has been giving me taste better than anything I’ve put in my mouth before. So I keep most of them in there until they disappear.

When Mommy feeds me solid food, she uses something she calls a spoon. If I’m going to be a big girl, I’m going to have to learn to operate this spoon all by myself. I’ve watched Mommy do it lots of times. It looks easy. I’m sure I can do it! If only Mommy would give me that spoon.

Clever Baby Learning to Eat

I did manage to get my hands on one of those spoons once. Mommy left one on the table in front of me and disappeared into the kitchen for a moment. I wasted no time. Quickly, I reached out my arms, grabbed that spoon, and held it tight.

It was time for the moment of truth. Could I use the spoon like Mommy does? I took a hard look at the utensil, and after a slight adjustment, I had a better hold of it, and I was ready. I opened my mouth and shoved the spoon in. So far, so good!

Baby with a spoon
I’m doing it!

This is where my mouth should end up full of food. But nothing! Not even a drop! Where was the food? I took the spoon out, gave it another hard look, and put it back in my mouth. Still nothing! How do you make the food come out?

I am sure that I was using the spoon correctly. The same way that Mommy does it. My spoon-handling skills could not be to blame. I tried again and again, but every time I got the same result. All my efforts were in vain. Clearly, the spoon was defective. Just my luck that I would grab a broken spoon.

So that’s the story of how I discovered the world’s first broken spoon. Mommy says this is all part of being a baby learning to eat and that sometimes early feeding milestones take practice. I’m not convinced. But tomorrow I will try again, just in case the spoon decides to fix itself overnight. After all, a big girl like me can’t let one tiny equipment malfunction slow down her journey to greatness.

It’s such an exciting time when our little ones start to feed themselves. 🙂

    • I try to do exactly that, but mommy tries to stop me from getting my hands in all that mushy food! She does let me squish chunks of food in my fists. That’s always interesting to do. Thanks for dropping by.

    • Today I spent half an hour scrubbing banana chunks, which were smashed in there at breakfast, out of the high chair cushions. I found a cookie in the process. I wonder how long that was in there. Thanks for reading.

  • It’s something of a rule that babies never hit their mouths first go, it’s up the nose or in the ear generally. Thanks for linking up to #chucklemums

    • I’ve managed to stuff food up Peachy’s nose a few times. She tries to help by lunging forward as I’m coming at her with the spoon. The results are usually disastrous. Thanks for reading.

  • Those malfunctioning spoons! Peachy should take it up with the manufacturer.
